"Gutter cleaning" means different things to different companies. This page lays out the standard, step-by-step scope, synthesized from how several providers describe their own process, so you know exactly what happens before you request.

What does gutter cleaning include?

A standard visit has six parts, in this order:

1. Setup and safety. The ladder is positioned at the correct angle against the house and tied off or otherwise secured before anyone climbs. An initial look at the gutters from the ladder identifies trouble spots and how much debris has built up, so the approach can be adjusted to the property rather than applied the same way everywhere.

2. Debris removal, by hand or vacuum. Leaves, twigs, seeds, granules, and general buildup are cleared out of every gutter run on the property, not just the sections that look worst from the ground. Depending on the provider and the property, this is done by hand and scoop, or with a vacuum system and hose reaching up from the ground; either way, a hand or hose pass typically follows to clear finer sediment that settles at the bottom of the channel after bulk debris is out.

3. Downspout test and flush. Each downspout is checked separately from the gutter run above it, because a gutter can look clear and still not drain if the downspout itself is blocked further down. The most common clog point is the top elbow joint where the gutter meets the vertical downspout section. A blower or hose is run through from the top; if debris does not clear from the bottom, the elbow is removed by hand, cleared, and reassembled. Water is then run through to confirm the section drains, not just that visible debris is gone.

4. Roofline check. The visible gutter run and roofline are checked for loose brackets, sagging sections, or obvious damage while the technician is already up there. This is a visual check, not a repair; anything found is reported, not fixed on the spot (see "what is normally extra" below).

5. Cleanup and haul-away. Debris that comes out of the gutters is bagged or collected and hauled away as part of the visit, not left in a pile on the lawn or driveway, and not billed as a separate add-on.

6. Report back. Before leaving, what was found (a clog, a loose bracket, unusual debris) is communicated, along with anything worth watching before the next visit.

What's not automatically included, and is normally extra

Guard removal and reinstallation, repair of damaged or detached gutter sections, and any work beyond debris removal and downspout flushing are not part of standard cleaning. If your gutters have guards, see what cleaning looks like with guards installed; guard handling is scoped separately because it varies by design. If a visit reveals damage that needs repair, that gets flagged rather than fixed as part of the cleaning, because repair is outside what a standard cleaning visit covers.

What about two-story or hard-to-reach sections?
