You don't need to climb up and look inside to know your gutters are due. Most warning signs show up at ground level or on the outside of the gutter itself, if you know what to look for.
Water overflowing during rain
If you see water spilling over the front edge of a gutter during or right after rain, instead of running out through the downspout, that section is likely blocked. This is one of the clearest and most common signs, and it's often visible from the ground during a storm.
Plants growing in the gutter
Weeds, grass, or even small seedlings growing out of a gutter mean there's enough decomposed debris and moisture sitting in there to support plant growth. That's a strong sign it's been a while since a cleaning.
Sagging sections or gutters pulling away from the house
Gutters are only built to hold a certain amount of weight. Standing water and packed debris add weight they weren't designed for, and over time that can pull fasteners loose or cause a visible sag or gap between the gutter and the roofline.
Water stains or streaking on siding
Dark streaks running down siding below a gutter section usually mean water is overflowing there instead of moving through the downspout, often from a clog nearby.
Standing water or erosion near the foundation
If you notice soil erosion, small puddles, or a damp patch near your foundation after rain, and it lines up with where a downspout empties, backed-up gutters or downspouts are worth checking before you assume it's something else.
Pests or nesting debris
Birds, mice, and insects are drawn to sitting debris and moisture in a gutter. Noise, nesting material, or visible activity are signs there's enough buildup to attract them.
What if I don't see any of these signs?
Absence of visible signs doesn't always mean gutters are clear, especially on a section you can't easily see from the ground. Use the cleaning frequency tool for a baseline based on your trees and region rather than waiting for a visible problem.
